Technology needs to be smart, sustainable, and integrated with everything – not passive

By Joy M. Lazcano, DOST-STII
“Society can be smart but not stable, stable but not smart – and both mean nothing if people don’t care.”
This is how Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Renato U. Solum, Jr. It explained the importance of building technology that engages people during the first festival of 2025, 2025, at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena, Laog City, Locos Domes, ilocos Norte.
In his speech, soliqum reported how dost aims to close the technology gap by transforming smart strategies into sustainable realities using science, technology, and innovation.
“When we say, ‘Smart and stable, who is the Filipina in our mind?’ Solum asked. “If we can’t answer this question honestly, then our plans – however advanced and impressive – will never reach their full impact,” Sulum explained.
He stressed that the ‘smart’ approach has always been inclusive, people-oriented, and grounded in the realities of everyday Filipinos.
“We have reached out to communities, even those that have been overlooked or difficult to serve. Ang Mga Lugar Po nato is called Geographically isolated areas and disadvantaged groups o gidas. “
Solidum explained that the DoST operates through the four strategic pillars that guide its programs and services nationwide, namely promoting human well-being, fostering wealth creation, reinforcing wealth protection, and institutionalizing sustainability.
When improving people’s well-being, soliqum reported that the host’s work starts with people, improving life every day, available scholarship, available scholarship, available scholarving, scholarving and staff development so that S & T workers are ready.
“NSTW itself is rooted in this pillar,” said Suluwum. “Because every show, every demonstration, everything new here is designed to empower and enrich the lives of Filipinos.”
He added that smart and sustainable communities start with healthy, capable and supported people.
In addition, solivum shared that for decades, the development of the country has been concentrated in Manila. “But the Philippines is not Metro Manila. The Philippines is made up of 7,641 islands, each with unique needs, cultures and risks.”
He added that it is another reason why there are complete offices in all regions, including technical support in the administrative region of Bangsamoroo in Muslim Mindanao, and in all provinces.
He emphasized that smart and sustainable development must begin by understanding the daily battles of the Philippines, which are produced, the warming that destroys the security and livelihood that affects the homes, the digital divides the high opportunities, and the MSMEs that are vulnerable after the disasters.
These debates, according to Soliqum, steal billions of pesos from the economy and therefore “project solutions” that are not good for the “city,” but for real communities with real problems, “said Sulum.
Solivum also talked about data and its use. He shared that his partners and its partners have produced large amounts of geospatial data, covering disasters, the environment, health, education, industry, and more. But the truth, he said, is that most of this information remains scattered and fragmented.
“It lives in silos, it’s often difficult to access or integrate,” explains Sulumimu. He said that often, decision makers spend more time looking for data than actually using it. “We can no longer afford this separation. As a department that develops new things, it must lead to the coordination of information, institutions, and understanding.” Solivum has been referred to geospatial intelligence as one of the most powerful tools at its disposal.
He explained that with tools such as geospatial and technology solutions, or the gateway system, disaster maps, where the economy has failed, or where resources can be prioritized.
Apart from this, the soliqum also means the growing economic power in making the power of wealth creation in a smart and sustainable society. He also explained that innovation should lead to income, stability, and better health for Filipino families.
Programs such as the small program of Enterprise Technology To develop or set up, the strengthening of society through science and technology or Cest, Niche centers in R & D (nicer) regions, POST, and the PHI test bring growth to local industries.
He said swes also supports precision farming, disease diagnosis, improved crop varieties, Internet-based monitoring, and community-based business model operations.
“But beyond technology, we support the dignity and empowerment of farmers. Agriculture must not only work – it must be profitable, it must treat agriculture as the next business.
He also emphasized the need to walk well. Projects like Seermo, an AI-driven platform that helps cities collect and analyze evidence-based data for revitalization University of The Philippines and sponsored by the host of the
“This shows that clean mobility can be adopted even in urban areas,” Solum emphasized.
When it comes to strengthening wealth protection, solivum stressed that “wealth protection is not just about assets – it’s about life, land, inheritance and sustainability.” He added that the department has protected communities by developing smart solutions, strengthening disaster preparedness, supporting environmental protection, equipping tools to reduce risks, and developing forecasting and alerting technologies and looking at forecasting and monitoring technologies.
“All disasters secure a livelihood. All reduced risks are secured for the future. This is a smart and stable governance in its hole,” emphasized Solivum.
In addition, soliqum explained that institutional stability as part of the host strategy is a long game as it requires strong cooperation with the LGUS, political preparation, and decision support systems for sustainable development.
He conveyed that GOST has partnered with 116 local government units in the country to help them use their road lines, adopt agricultural solutions, and travel, among the participants.
Solivum stressed that entering sustainable practices is not a one-year project – it is something of a National Mindset that requires a shared commitment from all sectors in all sectors. “Behind all the technologies, models, and systems, intelligent and progressive societies are returning to another reality,” Solum said. “They were built for people.”
2025 NSTW is the annual meeting of the scientific community of the country to share the benefits and importance of Science and technology with the Philippines. This year, NSTW Banners The Main Theme “Sysensya, Teknolohiya, e ItoBASyon: Kabalikat SA Matatag, Maginhawa, e Panatag Na Kinabukasan“And by creating subthemes of ‘building smart communities and sustainable communities’ to lower the national call for sustainability.
