As he begins his bid to become California’s next governor, Eric Swaloll, D-Calif.
Throughout his career in office, high-profile clashes with President Donald Trump have given Swallell a national profile. He seems ready to continue that pattern, repeatedly stressing his differences with the President as the Department of Justice (DoJ) announced a new investigation into him.
“Nancy Pelosi challenged me to lead a dysfunctional president. The people of California will never kneel,” Swalolly said in a video posted on her website.
The current governor of California, Gavin Newlom, is limited in 2026.

The DoJ opened an investigation into Swallowell for alleged money laundering and, according to NBC, may also be under investigation for tax fraud and insurance fraud. Swalwell denies any wrongdoing.
“The only thing that surprises me is that it took him this long to follow me,” said the statement following the news of the investigation.
Swalell first came to Congress in 2013 after serving as a Deputy Attorney General in California from 2006 to 2012. He briefly ran for President in 2020 but dropped out just three months after launching his bid.
In media interviews since Doj Prope’s announcement, Swalell has accepted his role as the administration’s target.
“This is about Donald Trump going after his political enemies. No one has ever been more vocal than me.” It means that Trump is left with Donald against his role in his role in 2021.
“I wouldn’t change one thing about what I’m doing to stand up to Donald Trump when he gets in my way fighting for Californians,” Stalwelly said. “I’m not going to slow down a bit because Donald Trump is trying to intimidate me, and it’s not working with the rest of his colleagues.”

In a post to the X, Swallowell disparaged himself and other Democrats facing similar charges from the doj.
“Like James Lowafa and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and a bunch to come -” Swalwell said.
His opposition to Trump appears even when his history in the 119th Congress did not jump off the page.
Notably, Swalwell has missed his 16% of votes since the start of the year, making him the 10th member – the majority of the house of representatives. He rarely broke with the party, voting for the majority of Democrats eight times since the beginning of the session. He also did not make a big noise in the elimination of money this year, he reported a respectable but respectable $ 1.4 million in the first three million of 2025.

But Swalwell’s pricing record against Trump stands out.
As referred to in his video, Swallowel was a party to fill the house for Trump in 2021 and, in addition to his case, he used his position on the House oversight committee to criticize the policies and behavior of the President.
“Next week, when we hear about someone who is Donald Trump’s opponent in the impeachment, it will be absurd,” Swalwell said in an interview with CNN. “It is true, I am one of the critics of the words against Donald Trump. I have the last case that survives being President – the police of Jan. 6.

The investigation into the swalwell is in its early stages. The DoJ has not announced if or when it will pursue a grand jury indictment. Swallowell’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
