(Do You Have a Life?)

The “Pavlov’s Dog” Reflex

I know exactly what you do.

You are watching TV, or “working,” or playing video games. Her name pops up on your screen. Ping.

You don’t just pick up the phone. You dive for it like it’s a grenade you need to smother to save the platoon.

She hits “send,” and before she can even lock her screen or put her phone back in her purse, she sees those three little dancing dots appear. You are typing back immediately. Instantly. Every. Single. Time.

What Your Speed Tells Her Subconscious

You think you are being attentive. You think, “I’m showing her she’s a priority!”

Wrong.

When you reply within seconds, every time, you are sending a very loud, very unattractive signal to her subconscious mind. That signal is:

“I have absolutely nothing going on in my life.”

It screams that you were sitting there, phone in hand, just waiting for her to validate you. It kills the mystery. It kills the chase. High-value people are busy. They have jobs, hobbies, friends, and errands. Low-value people are always available.

If you are always available, you are not valuable.

The Fix: The “Buffer” Rule

Here is your new rule for the early stages of dating (the first 1-3 dates):

Unless you are actively making plans for right now (logistics), never reply instantly.

When you see her text, read it. Then, put the phone down. Take a breath. Do 20 push-ups. Wash a dish. Stare out the window.

Give it a 5 to 15-minute buffer.

Let her wonder what you are doing. Let her wonder if you saw it. Let her wait a few minutes for your attention. Scarcity creates value. Be scarce.

Coming Up Next…

Waiting is hard, I know. You’re staring at the screen, itching to type.

But do you know what is infinitely worse than replying too fast? It’s when you reply… and then reply again… and again… because she hasn’t answered you yet.

We are entering the danger zone.
