Rachel Reeves urges Labor MPs to put together her ‘make-or-break’ budget
Chancellor Rachel Reeves urged Labor MPs to return his “fair and progressive” budget, warning that while it is not a universal measure, the package must be fully funded to deliver the government’s economic agenda.
Addressing a tense caucus after two weeks of leadership speculation, Reeves told MPs “Politics is a party game” and insisted the budget would contain policies that could sell confidence in the incumbent.
“If you look at the analysis that is being submitted you will see that this is a budget for workers, a progressive budget, a budget that I am proud of,” he said. However, he warned MPs that the measures must be taken “as a package, not a pick and mix”, telling them: “You would like 95%, but we have to bring this together.”
Reeves assured MPs that tax rises would “be kept to a minimum”, with the budget focused on cutting the cost of living, reducing NHS waiting lists and reducing the cost of public debt. He pointed out that reducing borrowing costs was important to free up money for public services.
The Chancellor emphasized that he was “determined to keep the contributions that people make as low as possible”, adding that the support of domestic budgets will filter into consumer spending and encourage business activity.
Reeves is expected to confirm on Wednesday that the UK’s economic growth forecast has been lowered for the next five years, despite Labor making economic growth its main engine at the last election.
He defended the labor record when he took office, highlighting increases in the national living wage, child lock recognition, free breakfast clubs in primary schools and the children’s section of free school.
