In South Park The third season was full of surprises, such as the Interoc Meteor Shower Trilogy which recalls the same night from multiple screenings. My favorite season 3 Easter Egg, however, is how Marvin’s “starvin’ in space” was the only episode during the open flu season. In the season 3 mini reviews, Trey Parker and Matt Stone said they skipped the usual opening story because they were serious. Starvin’ Marvin in space in its series it is different South park Canon. The cold open was intended for a proof of concept.
Even though we never see starvin’ Marvin again after this episode, I can’t help but wonder how they would stretch a little Ethiopian boy traveling through space to fight Christian missionaries, hostile tribes, hostile tribes.
Starvin’ Marvin in space
“Starvin’ Marvin in Space” is one of those early nonsense South park Episodes double as tables colliding, Christian missionaries, government overreach, and that high-pitched “high-pitched” song that plays when Marvin’s guys descend on Planet Marklar.
When the peaceful Marks, who refer to everyone, place, and thing as Marklar, “arrived in Africa and were soon surrounded by lions, Marvin’s village investigates an unknown ship. Fed up with missionaries forcing religion on his people to get food and goods, Marvin binds the ship to find a new home that does not conflict with religion.
Meanwhile, the CIA learns about the Marklar Spaceship and tracks the boys down to find it. The group teams up with Marvin on an adventure in between, when the CIA restarts Sally Stunters, revealed in the episode as a Jabba-like figure. The kidnappers, who bind the food offerings of their choice, cave to the temptation when they are offered chocolate yum yum yum and it becomes a friend of the government.
On Earth, TelVangelist Pat Robertson captures the spirit of spacevip and launches a spacecraft fundraising campaign for his xt-9000 church. His mantra, “God wants you to send us money,” becomes the rallying cry for sending missionaries to Marklar to spread the word of Christ throughout the galaxy.
Spoofs not included
In season 3 Comments, Parker and Stone said that while pressing South park In New York, a reporter told them that they were going to see a show about an Ethiopian boy traveling in space, carrying pedestrians, and the CIA, and they wanted to see more of it. He didn’t know it was one episode of South park. The commentary ends with Parker and Stone expressing regret that he never followed through on this idea.
The power of spoofing is always there, and it’s part of what makes this episode such a hidden gem. We never see Starvin’ Marvin because, according to tradition, he and his people live peacefully in Marklar. When the show moves beyond the Donald Trump arc managed by seasons 27 and 28, maybe it’s time to revisit this idea and find out what they have been doing for the past 26 years.
